Limetta Ladies: Alysia Mazzella
Limetta Ladies is a series exploring the lives of the women who inspire us. These women are journeying through life along their distinct paths. Despite our varied passions, the singular element that connects us is: we are all Women.
Alysia is an inspiring woman, with endless creative endeavors, who we are grateful to call a friend. She is one of those people you meet who immediately exude love and compassion, who's eyes speak volumes and you can't help but feel more alive after seeing her.
Alysia wears many hats, she is a medicine woman, storyteller, gardener, candle maker, and artist, just to name a few. She pours her heart into every piece of her life and it is evident in her work. We had the opportunity to hang with Alysia in her aptly named "work house" that her and her partner built together, to ask her a few questions about all that she is.
L. Give us a little history on your handmade biz. What motivated you start it and how did it come to fruition?
A. Grandpa Mazzella is my collection of herbal remedies made in the mountains Newburgh, NY. The company is named in homage to my grandfather and his old garden, which is where I grow my seeds right now. His garden is where I learned how to take care of plants. He passed away when I was in my early teens. My grandpa is an important teacher in my life, even though he isn’t physically here anymore, he left behind lots of physical things that continue on his lessons.
A. Candle-dipping is a passionate and disciplined process. It’s slow, by hand, one by one. Beeswax tapers change things, energetically, when lit with intention, when we’re alone, or gathering around a centerpiece with friends or family. I’ve connected deeply with the process and the product. The scent is incomparable! The wax burns so clean. Beeswax is scientifically proven to be uplifting and cleansing. I source small bulk beeswax from apiaries in the USA. I hope one day to use my own beeswax, but I love getting familiar with the different varieties.
L. Where do you find your inspiration?
A. What excites me in my daily life is what inspires me to create. The woods, the people around me, psilocybin in ritual, old poetry books. Also Drake’s new album. Especially track three on Scorpion, album two.
L. What has been your most profound lesson in running your business?
A. Life goes on. Root in purpose. Spend time alone. Family and friends are important.
L. How do you balance life and work?
A. “I promise I’m bridging the gap,” thats a Drake line. Everyday I’m working toward eliminating the gap between the going to work and coming home. I want them to be in the same place, with boundaries, so that I can continue to integrate who I want to be everyday with what I believe in.
L. What excites you most about 2018 and 2019?
A. This year has been a slow type of special. I’m getting my products out in the world, more stockists, more conversations, more collaborations. I’m looking at things in new ways and I feel more clarity around who I am, as an artist.
L. How do you re-center?
A. I recenter through alone time. I need it regularly and am thankful there’s space for this in my life. Stretching, chakra visualizations, moon rituals, card readings–not for psychic things, but for here-and-now things. Also dancing in the mirror, I hope I do that until I’m an old lady.
L. What's Next for you?
A. More beeswax taper candles. More salve blends. More liquid extracts. I created the Fourfold Oracle Deck which will be available for pre-order early 2019. I’m also prototyping new herb play: custom embroidered pouches filled with garden tobacco for a magician in your life.
